The Morning Habit Your Future Self Will Thank You For

As a makeup artist, one of the most common questions I get is how to make makeup look better and last longer throughout the day. People are often surprised when I tell them that the answer usually has very little to do with the makeup itself.

The biggest factor in how your makeup looks at the end of the day is often what happened before you ever picked up a foundation brush.
It starts with skincare.
When I work with women, I frequently hear the same thing: "I just don't have time for a skincare routine." What I often find, however, is that skincare has become another item on an already overwhelming to-do list. Products are applied quickly between checking emails, getting children ready, preparing for meetings, or rushing out the door. The routine becomes less about caring for your skin and more about simply checking a box.
What many women don't realize is that skincare isn't just about the products you use. It's also about the ritual itself.
Taking ten extra minutes in the morning to apply your skincare with intention can completely change not only the way your makeup performs, but the way you begin your day. When you slow down and massage your cleanser, serum, or moisturizer into your skin, you're encouraging circulation, supporting lymphatic drainage, and helping release tension that has built up in your face overnight. You're creating a moment of stillness before the demands of the day begin.
For many women, those few quiet moments are one of the only opportunities they have to check in with themselves.
The benefits go far beyond relaxation. Skin that is consistently cared for tends to be more hydrated, balanced, and resilient. Makeup sits differently on healthy skin. Foundation blends more seamlessly. Concealer creases less. Products wear longer and look more natural. Instead of fighting against dryness, irritation, or dehydration, your makeup is working with your skin rather than against it.
As an esthetician and makeup artist, I've seen firsthand how much of a difference a thoughtful skincare routine can make over time. The women whose skin ages beautifully are rarely the women searching for the latest miracle product. More often, they are the women who committed to small, consistent habits over many years.
We live in a culture that often encourages us to wait until something becomes a problem before addressing it. When it comes to our skin, many people don't think about caring for it until they look in the mirror one day and feel disconnected from the reflection looking back at them. At that point, they begin searching for more dramatic solutions when, in many cases, years of consistent care could have helped preserve the health, strength, and appearance of their skin.
This isn't about chasing youth or trying to stop the aging process. Aging is a privilege. It's about supporting your skin through the stress, environmental exposure, sleepless nights, hormonal changes, and countless experiences that life brings. It's about giving your skin the tools it needs to recover and thrive.
Most importantly, it's about giving yourself permission to matter.
When you take those extra moments in the morning, you're sending yourself a message that you're worth caring for. You're creating a routine that benefits both your physical appearance and your mental well-being. And while the immediate reward may be makeup that looks smoother, fresher, and lasts longer, the greater reward is building a habit of showing up for yourself every single day.
The next time you're tempted to rush through your morning routine, consider giving yourself ten extra minutes. Apply your skincare slowly. Massage your face. Take a few deep breaths. Let yourself wake up before the rest of the world demands your attention.
Your makeup will look better because of it. More importantly, you might feel better too.
